Worked example

Worked example: an emergency electrician whose page said 24/7 and whose phone did not, and what honest hours did

A worked example, labelled as one: no emergency-led client is published here yet. The firm is a composite of the emergency pages we audited for the guide on this site; the plan is what we would do; the results are expectations, marked as such.

The starting point: “24/7 emergency electrician” in the home page heading and on the van, a phone that is answered until about nine and goes to voicemail after, a Google profile with hours set to 24 hours, and two one-star reviews from people who rang at midnight.

What changes

Five edits, in the order they stop the damage

  1. 1

    The hours become true everywhere

“Emergency call-outs 7am to 10pm, seven days; overnight messages are called first thing.” On the page, on the profile as the real hours, and on the voicemail greeting, word for word.

  2. 2

The call-out fee goes on the page

A figure, and what it includes. The midnight caller who sees a fee rings; the one who sees “competitive rates” rings the next result.

  3. 3

The emergency page is rebuilt for a phone in the dark

The number as one tap above everything, the hours, the towns reached within the hour, what counts as an emergency, and what to do while waiting. No form, no van photograph, no history.

  4. 4

    The fault-name sections are written

“RCD keeps tripping”, “no power in half the house”, “burning smell from a socket”: what it usually is, what the electrician does, how long. Each is its own search, made before the caller decides it is an emergency.

  5. 5

The reviews are answered and the next ones asked for

The two one-star reviews get an honest reply that states the new hours. Every evening call-out ends with a request for a review that mentions the time, because “came out at 9pm” is what the next searcher reads.

What we would expect, labelled as expectation

Fewer midnight calls, more evening ones, and no more reviews about voicemail

The honest hours cost the firm the midnight searches it was never answering anyway, and the reviews that came with them. The evening searches, which the firm was answering, go to a page that says so, with a fee, and we would expect the page to show for “emergency electrician [town]” and the fault-name searches within weeks on an established site. The map search is decided by the profile, and a profile whose hours are true and confirmed shows as open when it is, which is the only time it should.

The measure is the one the firm already has: calls by hour for a month, written down by whoever answers, and the reviews. If the calls hold and the reviews stop mentioning voicemail, the page has done its job. If the firm wants the midnight work, the honest route is a night phone with a person on it, and then the page can say 24 hours and mean it.

How to read this page

  • The firm is a composite; no electrician is named, described or implied.
  • The hours and the fee are illustrative; the point is that the page says what the phone does.
  • The results are expectations, labelled as such; the measure is calls by time of day, which the firm already has.
