Worked example
Worked example: a PAT testing business that said “contact us for a quote”, and the page that prices it per item
A worked example, labelled as one: no PAT testing client is published here yet. The business is a composite of the testing sites we audited for the guide on this site; the plan is what we would do; the HSE position quoted is the regulator’s own and the results are expectations, marked as such.
The starting point: a one-person testing business with a van, steady work from three offices and a letting agent, and a page that says PAT testing is “a legal requirement every 12 months”, lists no price, and ends with a form. Search Console shows the business name and “pat testing [town]” at position 40.

What changes
The truth first, then the price, then the buyers
| Before | After | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “PAT testing is a legal requirement every 12 months” | HSE’s position in one paragraph: no legal annual requirement; the Electricity at Work Regulations require safe maintenance; frequency depends on the equipment and the environment; we advise on it | The office manager who checks HSE before booking finds the page agrees with the regulator, and books |
| “Contact us for a competitive quote” | A price per item, a minimum charge, and what is included: label, register, certificate, minor repairs | Forty items and a budget line can be booked without a phone call; the competitor’s page cannot |
| One page for everyone | Short sections for offices, landlords, schools and care homes, events and traders | Each is its own search and its own question; the landlord wants to know whether it is required for a tenancy, the school wants a register |
| A form asking for name and message | A form asking for premises type and approximate item count | That is all the quote needs, and the page has done the quoting |
| Nothing about qualifications | The course and body, the tester’s calibration certificate, the insurance | The contract buyer checks these before the price |
What we would expect, labelled as expectation
A thin field, an honest page, and the form doing the quoting
PAT testing is a thin field in most towns: a few national firms, a handful of local testers, and pages that all say the same wrong thing. We would expect the rebuilt page to show for “pat testing [town]” and “pat testing cost per item” within weeks on an established site, and the schools and care homes to come more slowly, through the register and the references, with the page’s job for them being to exist and be credible.
The measure is bookings that arrive from the form with the item count already filled in, which is the page quoting for the business. If the impressions come and the bookings do not, the price is the first thing to look at, and it is one line to change.

The free audit runs these measurements before we quote
Search Console, the coverage sweep and a page-by-page crawl are free to repeat on any electrician's site. We run them before quoting, and you get the numbers whether or not you hire us.
How to read this page
- The business is a composite; no tester is named, described or implied.
- The HSE position is the regulator’s own, linked from the PAT guide on this site; nothing here is legal advice.
- The results are expectations, labelled as such; the measure is bookings that arrive with an item count filled in.
